Peace Corps’ Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program (Fellows) Program
As a Paul D. Coverdell Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2), you will use the skills you gained as an international Peace Corps volunteer to examine complex social issues through an interdisciplinary perspective. Fellows study and complete their practicum in our Master of Social Work (MSW) or Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) program.
Master of Social Work
The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice prepares students to develop and deliver high-impact services with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. Our renowned faculty and curriculum, varied practicum placements, and commitment to social good and meaningful change will empower you to become the type of committed and compassionate social work leader that today’s complex world needs more than ever.
SP2 awards two MSW Coverdell Fellowships per year. Each Fellow receives a scholarship of $8,750 per semester, for a total of $35,000. MSW students who are eligible for federal work study support can also earn up to an additional $2,000 per year.
Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership
The Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice trains nonprofit leaders and social entrepreneurs to guide and transform organizations tackling some of the world’s most complex social challenges. Whatever your passion or professional interest, you’ll join a student community united by a common goal: create social impact through thoughtful, inventive, and meaningful work in nonprofits, charitable foundations, international NGOs, and more.
SP2 awards two NPL Coverdell Fellowships per year. Each Fellow receives a scholarship of $21,825 distributed over the course of the program. In addition to the scholarship award outlined, NPL students who are eligible for federal work study support can also earn up to an additional $2,000.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Satisfactory completion of service according to Peace Corps regulations (see the Coverdell Fellows webpage(opens in a new tab) for details)
- Enrollment in the full-time, two-year Master of Social Work (MSW) program or Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) program
- Indication of Peace Corps service in application
- Submission of application and supplemental materials, including letters of recommendation, by December 1st (students who apply by February 1st may still be considered depending on scholarship availability)
Fee Waiver
Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are eligible for an application fee waiver. To receive this waiver, email apply@sp2.upenn.edu with your name and state that you are a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer.
Application Process
Applicants to the Master of Social Work (MSW) or Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) programs who apply by January 15th are automatically considered. Students should indicate that they have served in the Peace Corps where requested on their application.
Applications received by the priority deadlines will be reviewed by the selection committee and fellowships will be awarded in March. Only selected students will be notified.
Please note that Coverdell scholarships and other SP2 scholarship awards cannot be combined.
Practicum
Practicum education is a critical part of study in both the MSW and NPL programs. Each year, SP2 students spend a combined 250,000 hours each year making a difference here in Philadelphia and around the world.
